How to Calculate Gold Price by Karat and Weight
Every gold price in the world starts from the international ounce price; the rest is simple arithmetic you can do yourself. This is the same formula the calculator above uses:
- Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 to get the pure (24K) gram price: 4,380.04 ÷ 31.1035 = 140.82 USD per gram.
- Multiply by the karat purity: 21K = 0.875, 22K = 0.9167, 18K = 0.75. For 21K: 140.82 × 0.875 = 123.22 USD per gram of 21K.
- Convert to your currency at the live rate, then multiply by the weight in grams — that is the raw metal value.
- Add the per-gram making charge × weight, then apply tax to the total (5% in the UAE, 15% in Saudi Arabia, no VAT on gold in Qatar).
The figures above are computed from the live ounce price at this moment, not fixed examples — they change with every price update.
Selling Gold: What the Shop Will Pay You
When you sell, the shop pays for the metal only — weight × the per-gram price for your karat — minus its own margin. The making charge and tax you paid when buying are not refundable, which is why the sell price is always below the buy price even when the gold price has not moved. To estimate what you will receive: set making charges and tax to zero in the calculator above, and the result is the raw metal value before the shop's margin.
The margin a shop takes when buying from you varies by dealer and by city, so ask more than one shop before selling, weigh the piece and check its karat hallmark.
