How to Use the Zakat Calculator

1
Enter your gold weight in grams
Weigh all gold you have owned for at least one lunar year (hawl). Include jewelry, coins, and bars. To convert other units: troy oz × 31.1, tola × 11.66, mithqal × 4.25.
2
Choose the karat
Select the purity of your gold. 24K = 99.9% pure. 22K = 91.7%, common in Gulf jewelry. 21K = 87.5%, most popular in Egypt. 18K = 75%, European-style pieces. 14K = 58.3%.
3
Select your currency
Pick your local currency to see the nisab threshold and Zakat amount in familiar terms. All values update instantly using live exchange rates.
4
Check the nisab threshold
The nisab is fixed at 85 grams of gold, but its cash value changes daily with the gold price. The row above your result always shows today's nisab in your chosen currency.
5
Read your result
If your gold value meets or exceeds the nisab, Zakat of 2.5% of the total value is due. If below, no Zakat is owed at this time. Remember: Zakat is only obligatory after one full lunar year of ownership (hawl).

Gold Zakat — Frequently Asked Questions

The nisab is 85 grams of pure (24K) gold — roughly 7.29 tola or 2.73 troy ounces. If the gold you have owned for a full lunar year is worth at least as much as 85g of pure gold, zakat is due. Because gold prices move daily, the cash value of the nisab changes too — the calculator above always shows today's figure.

Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its current market value, paid once per lunar year (hawl) if your holdings are at or above the nisab. For example, if your gold is worth $10,000 today, the zakat due is $250.

Scholars differ. The Hanafi school requires zakat on all gold, including jewellery worn regularly. The majority of Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars exempt personal-use jewellery within customary limits. If you follow the stricter view, or your jewellery is kept as savings rather than worn, include it in the calculator — and consult a scholar you trust for your situation.

One tola equals 11.66 grams, so the 85-gram nisab is about 7.29 tola. Multiply your tolas by 11.66 to get grams, enter that in the calculator, and it works out the value and the 2.5% zakat in your currency.

Lower karats contain less pure gold, so their per-gram value is lower: 22K is 91.7% pure, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75%. The calculator applies today's price for the karat you select, so 100g of 21K is valued — and zakated — at 87.5% of the pure-gold price. The nisab itself is always measured against pure (24K) gold.

Zakat becomes due after your gold has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar (hijri) year — the hawl. Many people pay in Ramadan for the extra reward, but any date is valid as long as a full hawl has passed.

The hawl is one complete hijri (lunar) year — about 354 days — counted from the day your gold first reaches the nisab. When the year completes and your gold is still at or above the nisab, zakat falls due. If your holdings drop below the nisab during the year, the hawl is interrupted and restarts once you reach the nisab again, according to the majority of scholars. Many people fix a hijri date — often in Ramadan — and pay their zakat on it every year.

Yes. The standard practice is to pay 2.5% of the gold's current market value in cash. The calculator gives you that figure in AED, SAR, EGP, USD, QAR, KWD, OMR or BHD using live prices.
