The total appears instantly at the current gold price.
How to Calculate Gold Price When Selling
When you sell, the shop pays for the metal only — weight × the per-gram price for your karat — minus its own margin. The making charge and tax you paid when buying are not refundable, which is why the sell price is always below the buy price even when the gold price has not moved. To estimate what you will receive, choose "Sell" in the calculator above and enter the shop's per-gram deduction if you know it.
The margin a shop takes when buying from you varies by dealer and by city, so ask more than one shop before selling, weigh the piece and check its karat hallmark.
Buying Gold — Frequently Asked Questions
How is the cost of buying gold calculated?
Three parts: the gold itself (weight × today's per-gram price for your karat), the making charges (the jeweler's per-gram fee × weight), and tax applied to that total. The calculator above does all three with live prices updated every 10 minutes.
What are making charges (masna3iya) and how do I enter them?
Making charges are the jeweler's fee for crafting the piece, usually quoted per gram on top of the gold price. They vary by shop, design and karat — ask the jeweler for their per-gram rate and enter it as an amount in your currency. For investment bars and coins there are no making charges (they carry a small premium instead), so leave the field at 0.
How much tax do I pay when buying gold in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Egypt?
In the UAE, VAT is 5%; in Saudi Arabia it is 15% — in both it generally applies to the full invoice (gold + making charges), which is how the calculator applies your tax percentage. In Egypt the gold metal itself is exempt and tax is generally charged on the making fee only — there, leave the tax at 0 and ask the jeweler for a making charge inclusive of tax. Rules change, so confirm the current rate where you buy.
Why is the shop price different from the calculator?
The calculator prices the metal at the live market (spot) rate. Shops add their own margin, making charges differ piece to piece, and some quote prices that already include tax. Use the result as a fair-value benchmark to negotiate from — if a quote is far above it, ask why.
How does the karat affect the price?
Lower karats contain less pure gold, so the per-gram price drops with purity: 24K = 99.9%, 22K = 91.7%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75%, 14K = 58.3%. The calculator applies the live per-gram price of the karat you select.
Are the prices live? Which currencies are supported?
Yes — gold prices and exchange rates update automatically every 10 minutes. You can calculate in USD, AED, SAR, EGP, QAR, KWD, OMR and BHD.
How do I work out what 21K gold is worth?
Multiply the weight in grams by the live 21K per-gram price, which is the ounce price divided by 31.1035 and multiplied by 0.875. The calculator above does it for you in your currency; add making charges and tax on top if you are buying a piece of jewellery rather than selling one.
How much is 1 gram of 21K gold?
One gram of 21K gold is the live ounce price divided by 31.1035 then multiplied by 0.875 — the calculator above shows it in AED, SAR, EGP, QAR, KWD, OMR, BHD or USD and updates every 10 minutes. That is the raw metal value: a shop will quote more when buying (making charges and VAT) and less when selling.
How do I calculate the price of gold when selling it?
Weight × the per-gram price for your karat, minus the shop margin — and nothing else. Choose "Sell" in the calculator above to see that raw metal value. The making charge and VAT you paid when buying are not recoverable, so the sell price is always below the buy price even when gold has not moved.
How do I calculate today's gold price myself?
Take the live ounce price, divide by 31.1035 for the pure gram, multiply by your karat purity (21K = 0.875, 22K = 0.9167, 18K = 0.75), convert to your currency, then multiply by the weight. Making charges and tax are added only on top of that, and only when buying.
Does the calculator work for gold bars and coins?
Yes. For bars and coins set the making charges to 0 — the result is the metal value plus any tax. Dealers typically add a small premium over this value that varies by size and brand.
